Why is hair falling out?

Защо пада косата?

Hair loss is a normal physiological process, part of the hair growth cycle and its constant renewal. Sometimes the number of a few extra hairs on the brush is a cause for shock and stress, but this is not always a precursor to impending baldness or disease. Excessive hair loss can be triggered by various factors, but most often the cause is the change of seasons.

It is considered normal for our scalp to lose 50 to 100 hairs daily. Sometimes we go through periods when only 50, 60, 70 hairs fall out, and others when it is 150-200 per day. These situations often coincide with the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. And as with mammals, lost hair regrows on its own.

Sudden or excessive hair loss outside these parameters may be related to some kind of disorder. Warning signs usually include: losing whole clumps when brushing, noticeable bald spots on the scalp, and/or prolonged hair loss for more than three months.

But what causes hair to fall out?

  • Age

Like skin, hair also ages. Over time, the hair becomes thinner and weaker, making it more susceptible to hair loss and breakage.

When hair loss intensifies and becomes a serious problem, it may turn out that you suffer from age-related or senile alopecia. This condition is genetically determined and leads to noticeable baldness.

  • Hormonal changes

Birth control pills, pregnancy, or menopause can cause hair loss in women. It is also normal to have heavy hair loss in the postpartum period, but it usually passes after a few months. Every body is different, so the hair renewal period varies.

Sometimes, to find a specific cause, doctors schedule tests for thyroid problems or hormonal imbalance. Hair often grows back once the cause is removed.

  • Stress

The effect of stress on hair can manifest in various ways: breakage, dry scalp, oily roots, dry hair, and of course, hair loss. When we are in difficult situations that cause a lot of stress, hair can fall out in clumps.

There is no special solution for this, except to wait for the storm to pass or to create relaxation rituals for yourself. Ideas? Take a bath, practice yoga, get a massage, or take a walk in nature. Find your activity that will restore your inner peace.

  • Poor diet

A deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals in the diet can contribute to hair loss, as the body lacks the necessary nutrients to promote hair regeneration and strengthening.

If your diet lacks proteins (the main building block of hair), you may notice hair loss. Meat, legumes, and dairy products are rich in these nutrients. If you do not consume any of these, first consult a dietitian to create a balanced diet or start taking supplements.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a common problem in many women. Both protein deficiency and this condition can cause hair loss, but in most cases, it is resolved with a doctor-prescribed iron supplement.

  • Medications

Taking certain medications such as antidepressants, ibuprofen, or anticoagulants can cause hair loss. If in doubt or experiencing strange symptoms, always consult a doctor.

  • Some diseases

Hair loss can also be the result of various health problems such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, hypothyroidism, diabetes, anemia, cancer, and others. Each condition has a different cause and treatment, so it is important to consult a specialist before starting any treatment.

  • Systematic treatment and styling

Strong pulling of the hair with different hairstyles, frequent exposure to heat treatment, and overuse of chemicals for bleaching and dyeing can change the structure of the hair strand. This disorder is known as traumatic alopecia.

How to stop hair loss?

Identifying the triggering factor is half the solution to the problem. Even when whole strands fall out, the phenomenon can be completely reversible and the hair can grow back. It usually takes about 6 months to regenerate, and it may take up to 12-18 months for the hair to return to its original state. A helpful step is to resort to dermatological cosmetics and take dietary supplements with vitamins and minerals. The ideal solution is to combine this additional treatment with an adapted hair care routine.

Avoid frequent dyeing, hair straightening, and other treatments that can weaken the hair strand. Handle your hair with care, especially when combing. Adapt the products you use: a good gentle shampoo and detangling conditioner are your best allies.

Another good idea is to finish your routine with an anti-hair loss tonic and, of course, with dietary supplements specially designed to accelerate growth and improve hair quality.

Hair loss can stress you out, but just look around and see how common it is among women. Know that you are not alone, and medicine and dermocosmetics probably have a solution suitable for you.

Pay attention to your overall health, your diet, and try to optimize the health of your scalp and the condition of your growing hair. Above all, be patient and don't get discouraged; it takes at least 6 weeks to see improvement. But you will see it.
