Facts and Myths about Antiperspirants and the Aluminum Salts They Contain

Повечето антиперспиранти съдържат алуминиеви соли, които спомагат за процеса на контролиране на прекомерното изпотяване.

Aluminum salts are among the most effective ingredients in anti-sweat products – antiperspirants. Very often, it is difficult to distinguish between them and deodorants in stores or pharmacies. While deodorants aim to mask the unpleasant odor of sweat, antiperspirants control the actual sweating process.

How does this happen?

For an anti-sweat product to be effective, it contains aluminum salts, specifically aluminum chlorohydrate. They have an important function – to reduce sweat secretion from sweat glands by forming small "plugs" on the overactive pores. These "plugs" are on the surface and are gradually removed through skin friction and regeneration. Products with aluminum salts also act as a barrier to bacteria, helping to eliminate odor.

Are they dangerous for thermoregulation?

The body's thermoregulation is not disrupted by antiperspirant sprays because the sweat glands in the underarm area make up only 1% of all sweat glands in the body. Effective products block only the overactive glands and thus do not affect the body's overall temperature regulation.

How does aluminum enter the body?

Most people consume between 30-50 mg of aluminum daily through food and water. It passes through the body and is naturally eliminated. When applying products containing salts under the arms, the body absorbs only 0.012% of 1 mg of aluminum salts. The effort to avoid using the third most abundant chemical element in the world by avoiding antiperspirants does not prevent the body from continuing to absorb aluminum through food, water, and air, and in much larger amounts.

Is there a connection between aluminum salts and Alzheimer’s?

In the 1960s in the USA, a major search began for the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Over 5 million elderly people were affected by the disease, so a "culprit" had to be found quickly. At that time, American scientists suggested that antiperspirants affected the brain by depositing aluminum in the gray matter. This claim persisted in the US for many years until it was debunked with scientific evidence. According to an official statement from the Alzheimer’s Association in the USA, there is no proven interaction between aluminum salts in antiperspirants and the disease, and the panic-inducing articles are based on an old and debunked myth.

Is it true that aluminum salts cause cancer?

The paranoia that deodorants and antiperspirants cause cancer is also not new in tabloid press and online. It started with a chain email about ten years ago spreading unproven claims that ingredients in antiperspirants accumulate in lymph nodes located in the armpits and cause cancer. Of course, these emails contained no scientific evidence, but the noise and panic spread to millions of people. In reality, despite persistent efforts, laboratory tests, and published scientific studies by the American and European cancer agencies, no direct link has been found between the two. The head of the oncology department at Mayo Clinic responds to yet another frightened question about the effect of aluminum salts on cancer as follows: "Everyone worries about deodorants and their ingredients, but no one stops smoking."

According to several prestigious publications and institutions, such as the American Health Organization, the American Cancer Society, and the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Union, there is no connection between cancer and the aluminum salt content in deodorants.

The pursuit of a cleaner life has captivated many modern urban people, but it is extremely important to clearly distinguish between knowledge based on scientifically proven facts and paranoia, fake news, and extreme conclusions based on personal opinions in forums and websites with questionable content.

One of the main tasks at biotrade is to regularly stay informed about the latest research, scientific articles, and global regulations regarding the safety of dermatological cosmetics. All ingredients in the brand’s cosmetic products are strictly checked for safety and analyzed before being approved for use at the European level and according to European standards. Therefore, you can be confident that if you follow the instructions for proper use of the product (application on dry, non-irritated, and healthy skin), you will achieve only the desired effect – reducing the amount of sweat and eliminating unpleasant odor under the arms.
