Take advantage of the power of dermatological products against blackheads by learning how they work

The number of people worldwide who at some point in their lives suffer from some form of acne is impressive. About 85% of the Earth's population, especially those aged between 12 and 24 years, have pimples or suffer from their milder form – blackheads.

Although it is a highly common problem, modern dermatology offers relatively easy treatment, although not everyone needs the same care. Depending on the severity of the problem, skin treatment may include specialized cosmetics against blackheads or therapy involving medication combined with appropriate cosmetics.

But before starting one of the two approaches, it is important to identify and understand the causes that lead to their appearance and development.

Causes of the appearance and development of blackheads

The medical term for blackheads is open comedones, and a comedone is the scientific term for an acne lesion (skin damage). One of the most common causes of comedone formation is the presence of very large skin openings of the follicles beneath them, known as enlarged pores.

Usually, hair growth starts from the hair follicles located in the skin pores. Beneath them are sebaceous glands that produce a protective substance called sebum. Comedones appear when the pores in the skin become clogged with dead cells and sebum.

The presence of blackheads is often mistaken for dirt buildup, but their development is not related to skin hygiene. In fact, it is due to the interaction of oxygen in the enlarged pores and the oxidation of melanin (the dark pigment formed by skin cells). This is what gives the dark or yellowish color on the surface of the blackhead.

Essentially, blackheads are characterized as a mild form of acne, but squeezing, rubbing, and other additional factors can worsen the problem. Conversely, proper treatment of blackheads can help prevent the development of more severe acne.

How to recognize the problem and what are its symptoms?

The appearance of a small dark imperfection on the skin is the main symptom of this very common problem. Although they are a symptom of acne, blackheads are most often caused by enlarged pores, which distinguishes them from other forms of acne by their characteristics.

They can be described as follows:

  • blackheads have a dense texture but are flatter than pimples.
  • blackheads are not inflammatory – meaning they are not contagious and do not cause pain or discomfort, unlike pimples and pustules.
  • the change in appearance caused by blackheads can lead to communication anxiety and social or psychological difficulties.

Should we consult a specialist before starting therapy?

Proper skin care can significantly reduce the likelihood that mild acne blackheads will become a serious problem. That is why most people manage them at home without needing to visit a doctor.

Usually, it is enough to follow a few basic principles to keep the skin healthy and clean:

  • the face should be cleaned twice a day with a gentle, dermatological product.
  • if makeup is used, it should not contain oils to avoid clogging pores.
  • makeup must be removed before bedtime, after which the face should be cleansed with a washing product and water.
  • it is advisable to avoid touching the face as much as possible to protect the pores from bacteria entering from the hands.
  • squeezing and popping blackheads and comedones at home is highly undesirable because it almost certainly worsens the problem due to lack of hygiene and knowledge.

If these measures in the daily routine do not work or the condition approaches severe acne, it would be wise to plan a visit to a dermatologist specializing in skin health.

They will clarify the condition and offer the correct therapy, which may include oral or topical medications, and prescribe an individual routine tailored to your skin type.

What types of products are suitable for blackheads and what should they contain?

When it comes to removing blackheads or other types of acne, the best course of action should be tailored to a number of, but not an endless amount of, factors. Fortunately, experience in global practice is already quite rich and shows which ingredients have the most pronounced effect in fighting them.

First of all, dermatologists recommend using non-comedogenic products that do not clog pores. Their main function is to keep pores clean and prevent the buildup of dead cells in them.

Gentle but regular skin cleansing can significantly help, provided the product used does not excessively dry the skin. It is important to regulate sebum production but avoid excessive dehydration.

If the skin is dry (dehydrated), this will stimulate sebum production by the glands and thus worsen the problem further.

Treatment with azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide is also available both by prescription and over-the-counter for non-inflammatory acne (blackheads). These are topical treatments applied directly to the skin. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that helps remove excess sebum and exfoliate cells from the skin surface.

Treatment with chemical exfoliants and the acids they contain (salicylic, glycolic, lactic) help dissolve dead skin cells and oils. Beta-hydroxy acids, like salicylic acid, are excellent for breaking down oils, while alpha-hydroxy acids (such as glycolic and lactic acids) have the additional benefit of healthy skin texture.

Treatment with linolenic acid and fatty acids found in some dermatological products against blackheads improves the quality of the secretion produced by the glands. They thin the sebum and thus prevent pore clogging.

Treatment with azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. At the same time, it regulates keratin production and thus stops the formation of comedones and inflammation.

And last but not least – good facial hydration should never be underestimated! Skin hydration is a crucial step in any routine care, especially important for acne-prone skin.

Active ingredients and therapies are often quite drying, and the most important thing for skin health is to maintain its proper balance. Therefore, good moisturization will allow balanced use of active products without causing additional complications.

Additionally, keep in mind that rest, relaxation, exercise, and a healthy diet are no less important allies in the fight for beautiful skin without blackheads. For example, stress can trigger sebum production, while rest and physical activity can reduce or regulate its appearance.
