Can we extend the effect of aesthetic procedures through home care?

Everyone undergoing aesthetic dermal procedures knows that achieving optimal results requires comprehensive care. While the procedures themselves stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to maintain the skin's radiance and firmness, it is important to also take care of the skin at home.

Why is home care important?

  • Prepares the skin for the procedure: Well-hydrated and nourished skin is more receptive to treatment and more likely to respond well to the aesthetic procedure. A good example of preparation is exfoliating 2-3 days before the procedure to remove dead cells and stimulate cell turnover.
  • Speeds up recovery: After the procedure, the skin may need time to heal. Home care can accelerate this process and reduce the risk of irritation and inflammation. For example, after laser treatment, it is important to apply cool compresses and soothing lotions to reduce redness and swelling.
  • Maintains the results: The effect of aesthetic procedures is not permanent. Regular home care can extend this effect and slow down the aging process. An example is the regular use of high-factor sun protection to protect the skin from photoaging. A suitable product for this is  Pure Skin illuminating day cream with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid SPF50+. It soothes the skin, protects it from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, and provides deep hydration.

The role of retinol

Today, more and more is being said about the miraculous effects of retinol. It is a derivative of vitamin A, known for its antioxidant and regenerating properties. It stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, thereby improving the skin’s elasticity, density, and hydration. Retinol is a powerful tool in fighting wrinkles, pigmentation spots, and other signs of aging.

Retinol can be used to support the effect of some aesthetic dermal procedures:

  • Chemical peeling and fractional CO2 laser : Retinol can improve the appearance of your skin and lead to a better long-lasting effect from chemical or laser peels. “But”… in medicine, there is always a “but,” and it is related to the dose and timing of application.

It is not recommended to use retinol, whether 0.5% or 0.2%, immediately before or after chemical peeling. Retinol and peels work by exfoliating the skin and can be too strong when used together, potentially causing irritation, redness, and even burns.

Here is what you need to know:

Before chemical peeling/fractional CO2 laser:

  • Stop using retinol at least 7 days before the peel. This allows your skin to recover and become less sensitive, reducing the risk of irritation after the peel.

After chemical peeling/fractional CO2 laser:

  • Wait for your skin to fully heal before resuming retinol use. This usually takes 7-10 days, depending on the intensity of the peel and your skin’s sensitivity.
  • Start with a lower concentration of retinol, such as 0.2%, when resuming use. Gradually increase the frequency and concentration as your skin tolerates it.

It is extremely important to consult a dermatologist before using a new product, including retinol, especially when combining it with other procedures like peels. They can assess your skin, recommend the appropriate product and concentration, and advise you on a specific schedule for your situation.

Dermal fillers and retinol:

Retinol can be used before and after filler injections to improve skin elasticity and prolong the effect of the procedure.

  • Before filler injections: It is recommended to use 0.2% retinol in the evening for 1 month before the filler injections. This approach can improve skin elasticity, stimulate collagen production, and provide a better base for the fillers.
  • After filler injections: You can use  0.5% retinol 2-3 times a week for 2-3 months after the fillers are placed. Retinol can help improve the skin and stimulate collagen production to extend the effect of the fillers. It also smooths wrinkles, fine lines, and improves skin texture.

Patients often ask me: “How does retinol enhance the effect and duration of dermal fillers?” Here is the answer:

  • Stimulates collagen production: Retinol activates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen production. Collagen is responsible for skin elasticity and density, which can provide a better base for fillers and prolong their effect.
  • Improves skin elasticity: Retinol stimulates the production of elastin, another important protein for skin elasticity. More elastic skin can better adapt to fillers, reducing the risk of migration or deformation.
  • Regenerates the skin: Retinol can help heal the skin and stimulate tissue regeneration.

Retinol is a preferred cosmetic ingredient that stimulates rapid skin regeneration and improves its elasticity by stimulating collagen production

Botulinum therapy and retinol:

Although retinol and Botox are popular solutions for fighting aging, they target different issues and have different but synergistic effects. Retinol improves skin quality, elasticity, and hydration, while botulinum toxin reduces expression wrinkles. Proper combination can lead to better and longer-lasting aesthetic results.

Here are some tips on how to combine them:

  • Stop using retinol 3-5 days before Botox injections to reduce the risk of irritation at the injection sites.
  • Carefully continue using  retinol 2-3 days after Botox, starting with a lower concentration and gradually increasing frequency according to tolerance.
  • Choose gentle retinol formulas: I would recommend  Biotrade night cream-mask for face with 0.5% retinol for better tolerance and lack of strong irritation.

It is important to note that retinol can irritate the skin. Therefore, it is recommended to start with a low concentration and gradually increase it. It is also important to use retinol in the evening, as it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Additional home care tips that can lead to prolonged effects from your aesthetic procedures:

  • Cleanse your skin regularly: Use a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type, morning and evening.
  • Moisturize your skin daily: Use a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type and climate.
  • Protect your skin from the sun every day: Use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, even on cloudy days.
  • Drink enough water: Well-hydrated skin is healthier and more radiant.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Eat healthily, get enough sleep, and try to reduce stress.

Consult a dermatologist to develop a personalized home care program that meets your individual needs and goals.

In conclusion, home care is key to achieving and maintaining optimal results from aesthetic procedures. Regular care with appropriate products, along with a healthy lifestyle, can help you enjoy radiant and youthful skin for longer.
