Gentle care for oily skin!

млад човек с мазна кожа

It turns out that powder is one of the oldest wonders of cosmetics. Even in Ancient Egypt, the faces of young women were covered with the wonderful fine powdery substance to make their skin look flawlessly white (the same is said about the Thracians).

Even today, ladies resort to their powder compact, but not so much for the whiteness of the skin (beauty now also lies in the complexion), but rather to hide unwanted shine. However, in many cases, the brush and compact prove to be a short-term solution, and the annoying shine of the skin quickly appears beneath the thin layer of makeup. Why? Unfortunately, the natural oiliness of the skin has reached excessive levels.

How to recognize oily skin?

Our skin produces oil daily, and this is good because it creates a natural antibacterial barrier. Sebum, or the skin’s oily secretion, makes it soft and elastic. Without it, the skin becomes dry, tight, and may even crack slightly.

But there is also the opposite scenario – the skin’s sebaceous glands switch to overactive mode and start producing too much sebum. Then we get the unpleasant feeling that our skin needs constant washing and cleansing (our face seems covered with an oily film), and after just a few hours, our makeup starts to run. Unpleasant shine appears, visible even in dim light.

Oily skin is a common skin type, and sebum oversecretion is typical for most young people, especially during puberty, when important hormonal and physiological changes occur along with maturation.

Yes, our skin is influenced by the hormonal rearrangement during the rebellious teenage years! During this key transitional period, testosterone levels rise in both boys and girls. Testosterone stimulates sebum production in the sebaceous glands, and excess sebum leads to oily or problematic skin (annoying blackheads and teenage pimples).

In fact, the most definitive cause of oily skin is genetics (we inherit characteristics down to the most basic cellular level). Excessive oiliness can also be triggered by external factors such as stress and climate conditions or provoked by medication use, as well as by the wrong choice of cosmetics.

Skin can also become oily during sports practice. Sweating from the sweat glands helps the body maintain optimal temperature, but excessive sweat production can damage the skin’s condition.

Types of oily skin

Oily skin is usually characterized by:

  • a denser, grainy texture (capillaries are not visible to the naked eye).
  • it is thicker and lighter in color
  • enlarged, visible pores (the larger the pores, the more active the sebaceous glands)
  • characteristic shine (which gives you away from a distance).

Excessive oil secretion can lead to problematic oily skin with clogged pores (comedones) or to bacterial infection and various manifestations of acne (teenage pimples).

In many cases, imperfections are noticed only in the so-called T-zone of the face – forehead, nose, and chin. Then the “diagnosis” is combination skin, where there is overproduction of sebum only in the middle part of the face, while the cheeks have normal (well-balanced) to dry skin (with sebum deficiency).

The problem leads to a solution. How to care for oily skin?

You definitely should not overdo washing. Even if the feeling of an oily film on your face makes you nervous and causes lasting internal discomfort, restrain the urge to remove excess sebum with lots of soap and water.

The first and main step in caring for oily facial skin is proper cleansing. And this does not mean constantly using makeup wipes or washing your face at every opportunity. The more aggressively you try to remove excess sebum, the more the skin’s sebaceous glands will activate and try to compensate for the loss.

The face should be cleaned gently, twice a day is perfectly sufficient (morning and evening), with products designed for oily skin type. Dermatologists recommend using micellar water or a cleansing product (gel or foam) that is rinsed off with water. We recommend washing your face at least twice with gel or foam after micellar water to thoroughly remove all buildup.

The paradox is that oily facial skin can also dry out and start to flake, even though the role of sebum is precisely to protect it from drying out.

This is usually due to overly aggressive cosmetics or too frequent cleansing. The golden rule is not to forget to hydrate your face. Specialists rely on hydration with light mattifying water-based day creams for daytime use, rather than those with a dense texture that would add more oil to oily skin.

Applying an active anti-oil lotion at night is the third main step. Using an exfoliating product once a week is also recommended.

“Besides removing dead cells, exfoliation deeply hydrates the skin and improves facial blood circulation, which stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity,” explain dermatologists.

Using an active product to counteract skin oiliness is mandatory for problematic oily skin prone to comedones and pimples. Mechanical cleansing once a month for this skin type should also become routine, but not at home.

You must seek the services of a professional cosmetologist to avoid the risk of infection when trying to deal with facial imperfections yourself. And be patient; acne treatment is a slow process – results usually appear after about a month.

The sun is not your ally!

Persistent and prolonged sunbathing indeed dries out the skin and hides imperfections under a chocolate tan. But just a month later, those same imperfections return with double force.

“Sun rays cause thickening of the stratum corneum and stimulate retention of cells and sebum in the sebaceous follicle. Thus, the number of comedones and pimples inevitably increases when the tan fades,” experts explain.

The solution is to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, although for very sensitive skin prone to pigmentation, dermatologists recommend the highest factor, SPF 50. Opt for non-comedogenic, light, and fast-absorbing textures designed for oily or acne-prone skin.

Products that deliver results

If you are determined to provide full care for your facial skin and know it is oily (consulting a dermatologist always helps for an accurate diagnosis), then your nightstand should always have:

  • a cleansing product
  • a mattifying toner
  • a moisturizing cream
  • an active lotion to combat imperfections and a suitable exfoliating product or mask.

Biotrade is among the pioneers in overcoming skin imperfections and daily care for oily skin types. The Acne Out series, which has been on the market for many years, is available in several configurations to cover all needs.

You can alternate the cleansing foam Acne Out with the one from the Pure Skin series, which is also designed for skin with enlarged pores, blackheads, and imperfections.

The mattifying Acne Out toner removes excess oiliness and prevents pore clogging, as well as the appearance of comedones and pimples, and can be used daily. It is good to combine it with the moisturizing cream from the same series, suitable for combination and oily skin, with a light texture that does not clog pores.

The moisturizing Acne Out Hydro Active cream has a gentle formula containing panthenol and vitamin E, which soothe and nourish the skin. It can also be used as a makeup base.

The active Acne Out lotion directly attacks pimples and blackheads and, in more severe acne cases, can be used up to twice a day (morning and evening) in combination with the Hydro Active moisturizing cream to avoid excessive drying of the skin.

The exfoliating Pure Skin toner is designed for devitalized skin with blackheads, enlarged pores, and uneven tone and allows frequent use. It pairs well with the Acne Out restorative cream, which has a SPF 30 protective factor and helps remove spots and imperfections after acne.

Summary: Quick tips for oily skin

  • Do not view your skin as a dirty container that must be thoroughly soaped. Over-cleansing oily skin has the opposite effect. The more you try to remove excess sebum, the more your skin will produce oil to compensate.
  • The approach should be gentle and smart. Opt for light cleansing products, water-based moisturizing creams, mattifying toner, and an active product against imperfections.
  • For problematic oily skin prone to comedones and acne, use a treatment product every day without exception – only then will you overcome stubborn imperfections.
  • Use products specially developed for oily skin and non-comedogenic makeup.
  • Do not squeeze pimples! This will only multiply the army of bacteria spreading on your skin.
  • And do not forget sunscreen even in winter. But most importantly, learn to love your skin – it serves you faithfully, even when it is not at its best.
